UK Healthcare donation boosts the Bolton Society for Blind People

2014 was a record breaking year of charitable donations here at UK Healthcare, as we were able to donate a total of £139,000 to a variety of healthcare related charities, including the Bolton Society for Blind People (BSBP).

Previously known as the Bolton Social Centre for the Blind, the BSBP has been around since the late 1940s; providing advice and support services to blind or partially sighted adults in the Bolton area. They aren’t alone: BSBP is assisted by more than 80 hard working volunteers.

BSBP activities include social group meets, advice and guidance, IT courses, a befriending service, and various activities throughout the year.  . All services are provided to blind or partially sighted people for free; which means that the society relies on the kindness of local patrons and UK businesses to keep them going.

UK Healthcare donated £5,000 to BSBP in late 2014; and that donation is being used to boost the organisation’s Befriending Service; which sends a volunteer to visit a blind or partially sighted person who is isolated and in need of support. It could be a social visit, or a situation in which the person needs help; it could even be to support them getting out and about.

Glen Sheader, Project Development Worker for the Bolton Society for Blind People, was in no doubt that the donation would help even more people in the area than before.

He said: “The kind donation from UK Health Care will have a huge impact on our members.  More specifically, the Befriending Service.  This will allow BSBP to train and support many more volunteers and match them with members who are in need.

“Thank you from all at BSBP for thinking of our cause”.

If you know of someone who is visually impaired and who may need support from BSBP, or if you know somebody who would like to volunteer, contact the charity today.
