About Us
The roots of our parent company, Bolton & District Hospital Saturday Council, can be traced back to 1813 when the residents of Great and Little Bolton organised a public collection to raise money for the first 7-bed dispensary. By 1877 an organisation was set up to raise the huge sum of £70,000 needed to build a new infirmary to meet the ever-increasing needs of the town. To fund the planned new building and the dispensary the town’s residents paid less than 1p a week from their wages on a Saturday and so Bolton & District Hospital Saturday Council was born.
As a wholly owned subsidiary of Bolton & District Hospital Saturday Council we are proud of our associated heritage and that our parent company continues to provide an underwriting service to us, underpinning our beliefs. Although we have come a long way from our Hospital Saturday roots the values of making every day healthcare affordable and accessible to all are retained. We also still provide regular charitable donations to health-related charities and causes and our goal is to continue doing so for many years to come. Our charitable ethos is a key feature of our constitution as a not-for-profit organisation.
